Pilate's Feeble Attempts To Release Jesus
Text: John 19: 12
PILATE’S FEEBLE ATTEMPTS TO RELEASE JESUS
After this word from Jesus, Pilate sought to find ways and means to release Him. His efforts however, were quite feeble.
“From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, ‘If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.’”
John 19:12
1. “From then on Pilate sought to release Him”
a. He had declared to the Jews that he had found no fault in Jesus.
b. He had tried appeal after appeal.
c. He was trying to placate the furious mob of Jews’ intent on seeing Jesus crucified.
d. These attempts were feeble.
e. They did not achieve anything at all.
f. His attempts only made the Jews angrier.
g. They became even more determined to put Jesus to death.
h. Pilate spoke of having power:
i. To crucify.
ii. To release.
iii. He showed that he had no power over the Jews at all.
2. “But the Jews cried out”
a. They pressed every angle to force Pilate to do their will.
b. They used the religious angle, insisting that Jesus had to be put to death because He had broken the law.
c. They tried a new angle as time wore on.
3. “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend”
a. The Jews had no real love for Caesar.
b. But they used the name of Caesar in the hope that they might frighten Pilate.
c. If they reported that Pilate was not “Caesar’s friend” then he was Caesar’s enemy.
4. “Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar”
a. The Jews used every means possible to make Pilate give the death sentence to Jesus.
b. They insisted that Jesus had spoken against Caesar because He made Himself a King.
