A Rash Disciple

Text: John 18: 10 - 11

A RASH DISCIPLE

Peter was a fisherman before he became a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. He had grown up rough and tough as one who was a tradesman. His trade was fishing. He was rather inclined to be somewhat rash.

Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. So Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?’”

John 18:10-11

iii. He could have killed Malchus.
b. Jesus had already asked the arresting detachment to spare His Disciples.
c. Now, Peter had struck first and cut off the ear of a servant of the high priest.
d. This could have sparked off a battle where many could be injured or killed.

2. “So Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put your sword into the sheath’”

a. Jesus had to speak firmly to Peter.
b. He must put away his sword.
c. He must sheath it and not use it to cause others to get hurt.

3. “Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me”

a. Once again, Jesus was conscious of His Father’s presence.
b. The cup of suffering
i. Jesus prayed over this cup of suffering (Matthew 26:36-46).
ii. Three times He brought this up to the Father.
iii. He understood and accepted that this cup was given by His Father to drink.
c. He must drink this cup no matter how bitter it may be.
d. Peter must try and understand why Jesus did not want him to resist and fight the guards.
e. Jesus showed absolute calm and composure because He had learned to fully trust His Father.

“西门彼得带着一把刀,就拔出来,将大祭司的仆人砍了一刀,削掉他的右耳。那仆人名叫马勒古。耶稣就对彼得说:‘收刀入鞘吧!我父所给我的那杯,我岂可不喝呢?’”
