The Fulfilment Of Scripture
Text: John 15: 25
THE FULFILMENT OF SCRIPTURE
The Scriptures were so much a part of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ. Even as He spoke about how He was hated, the Scriptures came to mind.
“But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’”
John 15:25
1. “But this happened”
a. Jesus was referring to the hatred of the Jews for Him.
b. He was not surprised by the hatred of his enemies.
2. “That the word might be fulfilled”
a. The “word” referred to:
i. “Who hate me without a cause” Psalm 35:19
ii. “Those who hate me without a cause” Psalm 69:4
b. Both Psalms were written by King David
i. They were personal references to David and his enemies.
ii. They were also prophetic, and applicable to Jesus.
3. “Which is written in their law”
a. The Jews had the same law.
b. Jesus was citing texts that the Jews might have read.
c. It was called “their law” not in the exclusive sense of the word.
d. It was used to highlight the fact that the Jews were familiar with God’s laws.
4. “They hated Me without a cause”
a. Jesus had a deep knowledge of the Scriptures.
b. He drew much comfort from the Word of God.
c. He understood His enemies better because of the Scriptures.
d. He was more prepared mentally and spiritually to face the hatred of the Jews.
e. He sought to encourage His Disciples at this difficult time.
f. The role of the Scriptures must be firmly established.
g. The Disciples knew how much more effort they had to put in to know the Scriptures better.
h. Our challenge is also to know the Scriptures better too.
