The Testimony of John II
Text: John 1:32-34
And John bore witness, saying,
‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.
I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me,
‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Spirit.’ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.’”John 1:32-34
THE TESTIMONY OF JOHN II
1. John’s testimony was his way of bearing witness for Jesus.
2. John had baptised thousands of people.
a. They had been convicted of their sinfulness.
b. They realised that they needed to repent from their sins.
c. They sought baptism as a symbol of forgiveness, pardon and cleansing from their sins.
3. A special phenomenon.
a. John saw a dove descending from heaven.
b. It alighted on Jesus.
c. It remained upon Him for a bit.
4. Remembering a message from God.
a. God foretold this event.
b. John would be able to identify Jesus when this happened.
c. This word from God was remembered by John.
5. Repeating an important statement made.
a. “I did not know Him.”
b. John had no way of colluding with Jesus.
i. Jesus grew up in Nazareth.
ii. John grew up in the wilderness.
REFERENCE TO THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
1. Baptism is a special symbol of belonging to the Lord.
2. The Holy Spirit is given to everyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is an invisible work done by the Lord to confirm that the believer has indeed come to true faith in Jesus.
