John The Baptizer
Text: John 1:29-31a
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.’”
John 1:29-31
JOHN THE BAPTIZER
1. He was a prophet sent from God (John 1:6).
2. He was “the voice of one crying in the wilderness” (John 1:23).
3. He was sent to prepare the way for the Messiah (John 1:23).
THE TESTIMONY OF JOHN I
1. “After me comes a Man who is preferred before me”
a. John honoured the Lord Jesus Christ.
b. This was correct.
c. Jesus is indeed “the preferred one”.
d. The simple reason given: “He was before me”.
i. Jesus was the Eternal Being, thus He was “before” John was even born!
ii. John was but a finite human being.
2. “I did not know Him”
John declared that he was not in collusion with Jesus at any time.
3. “But that He should be revealed to Israel”
a. John had been sent to reveal Jesus to Israel.
b. He was determined to fulfil his responsibility.
PRESENTING JESUS AS THE LAMB OF GOD
1. This is a Jewish expression.
2. In the ancient days lambs were sacrificed to atone for sins committed.
3. Jesus was presented as the “sacrificial lamb of God”.
4. Through His death He would redeem all who would believe in Him.
5. Jesus had come to take away the sin of the world.
