Text: Galatians 3: 23-25
MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION
“But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.”
Galatians 3:23-25
THE FUNCTION OF THE LAW
1. What the Law cannot do:
a. It cannot give justification.
b. It cannot make a person righteous.
2. What was the Law’s function?
a. The Law is a good keeper/ guard.
It guards the person from falling into grave sin.
b. The Law is also a good tutor.
It teaches us many important truths!
3. Special appreciation of the Law.
a. The Law is to be appreciated before one finds personal faith in the Lord Jesus.
b. Before personal faith is found, the Law teaches many lessons:
i. About a holy God.
ii. About the problem of sin and its deadly effects.
4. The place of Faith:
a. This is a reference to personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
b. The Law points out the fact that we need the Lord Jesus to be our Saviour.
c. The Law teaches us about how we will be justified through faith in the Saviour.
d. Faith in the Lord Jesus must be genuine.
5. “No longer under a tutor”
a. Paul was not rejecting the Law.
b. Ideally, faith becomes our tutor.
i. Faith in the Lord is to be developed carefully.
ii. Faith can be a great teacher.
6. Struggling in our faith:
a. As long, as we are struggling in our faith, the Law will continue to play its role.
i. Of being a guard.
ii. Of being a tutor.
b. The Law is not to be set aside.
i. We need to understand its place.
ii. We must see how the Law would lead us to a deep faith in the Lord Jesus.
