MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION
“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”
Galatians 3:13-14
REDEMPTION FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW
1. The word “redemption” is most meaningful:
a. It is a synonym of “salvation”.
b. It is also used to describe something “regained”.
2. The Curse of the law.
a. This is the punitive aspect of the law when it is broken.
b. It is called “a curse”.
c. It is the opposite of “a blessing”.
3. How does the Lord Jesus redeem us or save us from the curse of the law?
a. By taking the curse on Himself.
b. By absorbing the punishment of the law on our behalf.
4. An old law saying:
a. “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”
b. This was a statement from Deuteronomy 21:23.
i. If a person is found to be guilty of a sin that is punishable by death.
ii. He may be hanged on a tree.
iii. The guilty person is adjudged to be “cursed”.
c. The Lord Jesus was crucified on a cross.
i. This is the equivalent of being hanged.
ii. But the Lord Jesus was not crucified for His sins for He had none.
iii. He was crucified for the sins of mankind.
iv. Having done that, He has redeemed us from the curse of the law.
5. The blessing of Abraham
a. God promised to bless Abraham.
b. This blessing is not restricted to Israel.
c. God’s blessing includes Gentiles who have come to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
d. The blessing of being given the Holy Spirit is received through faith in the Lord Jesus.
