MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION

“But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for ‘the just shall live by faith.’ Yet the law is not of faith, but ‘the man who does them shall live by them.’”

Galatians 3:11-12

NOT JUSTIFIED BY THE LAW

1. Paul explained why Justification cannot be by the law.

a. No one can keep the law perfectly.
b. If the law is broken, it results in a penalty (a curse).
c. The law was never meant to bring about justification.

2. Man’s sight versus God’s sight.

a. In Man’s sight:
i. He may believe he can keep the law.
ii. He may think that striving to keep the law is good enough.
iii. This perception is erroneous.
b. In God’s sight:
i. Man is unable to keep His laws.
ii. Justification is not possible from keeping the law.
iii. Man is sinful and is not righteous in God’s sight.

3. God’s teaching about Justification.

a. Justification is made possible by God’s grace and mercy.
b. The Lord Jesus took the penalty of our sins on Himself when He died on the cross.
c. Through faith in the Lord Jesus, we have justification.

4. A life of faith

a. The person who is justified, that is, he has righteousness imputed to him, is called “Just” or “Righteous”.
b. Since he is justified by faith, he must seek to live by faith.
c. This was a truth taught by the prophet Habakkuk.

“The just shall live by his faith.”

Habakkuk 2:4

5. The law versus faith.

a. The law is not of faith.
b. Meaning of the word “law” here:
i. The system of law.
ii. It was meant to help regulate life on earth.
iii. It helped to develop the Jewish judicial system.
iv. The law was never meant to bring about justification or salvation.
c. Meaning of the word “faith” here:
i. It is a system of spiritual truth.
ii. It involves a personal faith in God and His plan of salvation.
iii. Faith results in justification from God.

6. The person who believes in the law.

a. He will have to live by them.
b. He will find that he cannot keep the law of God perfectly.
c. It leaves one frustrated.

7. The person who believes in the Lord Jesus.

a. He lives by faith in the Lord.
b. He will have the support (supply) of the Holy Spirit.
c. He will be blessed by the Lord.

iii.

iii.

iii.

iii.
