Text: Colossians 2: 22-23
MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY
“Which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.”
Colossians 2:22-23
SELF-IMPOSED RELIGION
1. Paul correctly described the religion of the false teachers.
He called it “self-imposed religion!
2. Man-made religion:
a. Commandments are issued to their adherents.
b. Doctrines were formulated and then taught.
c. The origin of these commandments was not the Lord.
d. These doctrines and commandments came from human beings.
3. Some features of the self-imposed religion:
a. False humility.
This was taught as offering worship to angels!
b. Neglect of the body:
i. The practice of fasting was one feature.
Sometimes, fasting lasted many days.
ii. Abstention from food can be detrimental to health.
This was self-imposed!
4. What was the value of these rules and regulations?
a. Paul declared their rules as of no particular value.
b. One of the problems of life is “the indulgence of the flesh”.
i. The weakness of the flesh leads one to sin.
ii. Grave sins can be committed because of the weakness of the flesh.
c. Can these man-made commandments help one to overcome sin?
The clear answer is “No!”
5. To overcome sin:
a. We need God’s power.
b. We need the Lord’s presence to inspire us.
c. We need the Holy Spirit to strengthen us
d. Only through faith in the Lord Jesus would we be able to overcome our sinful flesh.
