MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY
“Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— ‘Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle.’”
Colossians 2:20-21
SECULAR PRINCIPLES OF THE WORLD
1. The world has had many sets of principles.
a. Secular principles.
b. Religious principles.
2. Across the centuries.
a. The secular sets of principles have kept changing.
b. Every generation seems to live by its own determined principles.
RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLES
1. Many religions have always existed from time immemorial.
2. Each religion has its own sets of principles for their devotees to live by.
3. Many of these have also changed with the passing of time.
THE ROOTS OF CHRISTIANITY
1. The roots of Christianity may be traced to Judaism.
2. Both have many things in common.
3. The following may be highlighted:
a. Both believe in one God (Monotheism).
b. Both subscribe to the Scriptures.
c. Both believe in the need of redemption from God.
d. Both believe in the hereafter.
e. Both believe in living a strongly moral life.
THERE ARE ALSO CLEAR DIFFERENCES
1. Christianity is focused on the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ.
a. Faith in the Lord Jesus.
b. Eternal life is promised to the believer.
2. The Insistence of the false teachers.
a. The principles they believe in concern the following:
i. Do not touch.
ii. Do not taste.
iii. Do not handle.
b. These religious teachings were emphasised.
i. Believers must be subjected to keeping these rules.
ii. Those who do not adhere are criticised severely.
3. Paul disagreed strongly.
a. These rules were “basic principles of the world”.
b. These were not rules ordered by the Lord Jesus.
c. Why should any believer subject himself to these man-made worldly rules?
