MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY

“Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

Colossians 1:12

GIVING THANKS TO GOD

1. Giving of thanks to God the Father.

a. This was something that Paul did naturally.
b. This was done consistently too.
c. Genuine gratitude enabled Paul to give thanks to God again and again.

2. When Paul was not a believer yet.

a. It was doubtful that he was a man filled with gratitude and thanksgiving.
b. His heart was filled with strong negative feelings:
i. He had rejected the idea that the Lord Jesus was the Messiah.
ii. He felt so much hatred and animosity towards the Christians.
iii. He persecuted them with a sense of vengeance.

3. When Paul became a believer he was changed completely.

a. He related to God as Father.
b. He realised how wrong and sinful he had been.
c. He related to God with deep gratitude and thanksgiving.

4. Things he was thankful for.

a. Qualified to be partakers of a great spiritual inheritance.
i. Once Paul thought that he could earn merit with God if he persecuted the Church.
ii. In salvation, he knew any inheritance would be an act of God’s grace.
iii. It was God who would qualify anyone to become a spiritual heir.
b. “The inheritance of the saints in the light”
i. All believers were declared righteous and holy by God the Father.
ii. Thus, they are called “saints”.
iii. Saints in the light would refer to the fact that they are in heaven with God.
iv. They would be given a special inheritance in heaven.
v. The fact that one can enter into heaven would require God’s grace to be given.

5. Remembering what the Lord Jesus taught about God’s gift of eternal life.

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

John 3:14-17

a. The Son of Man was the Lord Jesus Christ.
b. He would be lifted up on the Cross of Calvary.
c. Whoever believed in Him would have everlasting life.
d. The love of God the Father is seen clearly in this promise of eternal life.
e. He offers salvation to all through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
