“And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the pre-eminence.”
Colossians 1:17-18
THE PERSON OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST II
1. The Lord Jesus is “before all things”.
a. This speaks of His eternal existence.
b. Long before creation, He was already there with God the Father.
2. “In Him all things consist”
a. He is the One who upholds all things.
b. This speaks of His omnipotence.
c. He shares the same eternal attributes as God the Father.
3. “And He is the head of the body, the church”
a. The Church is described as “the body” of the Lord Jesus Christ.
b. The role of the Lord Jesus is that of being “the head”.
i. He directs the Church.
ii. He is the one heading the church.
iii. He is the One who has full authority of the body, the church.
4. “Who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead”
a. He is the beginning in many ways.
b. The following may be highlighted:
i. He is the Alpha.
ii. He is also the Omega.
iii. He is the firstborn from the dead.
He is the firstfruits of the resurrection promised by God.
5. “That in all things He may have the pre-eminence”
a. The Lord Jesus deserves all honour and glory.
b. In everything, He is to be exalted.
c. The Lord Jesus must never be relegated to a secondary role in any way.
