Text: Luke 6: 29-30

PALESTINE IN THE FIRST CENTURY

1. Israel was under the rule of Rome in the 1st Century.

2. Rome appointed Herod as king over Palestine (Judea and Galilee).

3. Soldiers roamed every where.

a. There were guards who served under the Sanhedrin Council.
b. There were soldiers who served King Herod Antipas.
c. There were also Roman soldiers stationed:
i. In Caesarea Philippi (headquarters)
ii. In Jerusalem as well (Fortress Antonia.

CRUEL BULLIES

1. Many of the soldiers bullied the citizens.

2. Some of the things they did commonly:

a. They slap people (strike on the cheek). Luke 6:29a
b. They snatch people’s cloaks. Luke 6:29b
c. They “ask” people for goods.
(Asking shopkeepers for things they want.) Luke 6:30a

A SURPRISING RESPONSE TAUGHT

1. This was in line with what the Lord Jesus had taught (Luke 6:27-28).

2. Practical response elaborated:

a. Offer the other cheek (Luke 6:29b)
i. Do not retaliate.
ii. Be humble in submission.
b. Offer the offender more.
i. The tunic as well as the cloak.
ii. Give without a desire to have payment in mind.

3. This would be a very difficult thing to practise.

a. One has to have deep faith.
b. One would have to be well-taught.
