Text: Luke 4: 25-27

CITING TWO MIGHTY PROPHETS OF OLD

1. The Prophet Elijah

a. There was a great famine in his days.

b. There was no rain for 3 ½ years.

c. The effects of the famine were felt throughout the land.

2. To whom was the prophet sent to minister?

a. He was not sent to anyone in the land of Israel.

b. He was sent to minister to a widow in Zarephath.

c. This was in the region of Sidon.

d. She was a widow who shared her food with Elijah.

e. God provided for her needs during the great famine.

3. The Prophet Elisha

a. He was the disciple of Elijah.

b. He succeeded Elijah wonderfully.

4. There were many lepers in Israel in Elisha’s time

a. But no one was healed of their leprosy.

b. There was one exception.

c. Naaman the Syrian was healed of his leprosy.

WHAT WAS THE POINT THE LORD JESUS WAS MAKING?

1. The Ministries of Elijah and Elisha

a. They were mighty servants of God.

b. Miracles were performed by them.

i. Provision for the widow of Zarephath.

ii. Healing of a Syrian.

c. But Israel did not profit from their ministries.

d. This was because the land was so steeped in sin.

e. Only those who were humble were blessed.

2. The land of Galilee was also spiritually dark (Matthew 4:15-16)

a. They sat in darkness.

b. They sat in the region and shadow of death.

c. The Great Light had come.

But would they receive this Light?

3. The people from Nazareth

a. They were not prepared to listen to the Lord Jesus.

b. The Light had shone on them but they did not welcome Him.
