Text: Luke 22: 66-68

THE BEATING OF THE LORD JESUS IN THE HOUSE OF THE HIGH PRIEST

1. This took place at night.

2. This was an uncalled-for meeting.

a. It was irregular.
b. It was illegal.
c. It was cruel.
d. It was designed:
i. To mock.
ii. To humiliate.
iii. To intimidate

THE FORMAL MEETING BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN COUNCIL I

“As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, ‘If You are the Christ, tell us.’ But He said to them, ‘If I tell you, you will by no means believe. And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go.’”

Luke 22:66-68

1. The Sanhedrin Council does not meet at night.

2. The High Priest had to wait for day-break to convene a meeting of the Council.

3. The People who made up the Council:

a. The elders of the people
b. Chief priests
c. Scribes
d. The High Priest presided the Council Meeting

4. A formal question put to the Lord Jesus.

“If You are the Christ, tell us.”

Luke 22:67a

5. The Response of the Lord Jesus.

a. “If I tell you, you will by no means believe.”
i. The Lord Jesus knew that it was useless giving them a reply.
ii. They had already made up their minds.
iii. The fact that they had beaten and mocked Him in the night would confirm that what the Lord Jesus had said was indeed true.
b. “And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go.”
i. The Lord Jesus had the right to defend Himself.
ii. He had the right to pose questions for the Council to answer.
iii. But He knew that they would not answer his questions anyway.
iv. He knew that they would never let Him go, now that they had Him in custody.
d. The beating the Lord Jesus received in the night.
i. That had no effect on His mind or heart in any way.
ii. He was not in the least intimidated.
iii. He continued to display great calmness and courage.

3. 组成公会的人:

a. 民间的众长老

b. 祭司长

c. 文士

d. 大祭司主持公会会议

4. 向主耶稣提出的正式问题

“你若是基督,就告诉我们。”

5. 主耶稣的回应

a. “我若告诉你们,你们也不信”

i. 主耶稣知道回答他们是无效的

ii. 他们已经打定主意

iii. 他们在夜间殴打、讥讽祂的事实已证明了主耶稣所说的是真的

b. “我若问你们,你们也不回答。”

i. 主耶稣有权为自己辩护

ii. 祂有权向公会提出问题

iii. 但祂知道他们无论如何都不会回答祂的问题

iv. 祂知道他们已把祂拘留了,是绝对不会放过祂的

c. 主耶稣在夜间受到的殴打

i. 这对祂的心思意念完全没有任何影响

ii. 祂丝毫不感到胆怯

iii. 祂继续表现出极大的冷静和勇气
