Text: Luke 20: 41-44

THE PROPHECY ABOUT THE MESSIAH

1. The Prophetic Scriptures foretold the coming of the Messiah.

2. He would be the Saviour and King of Israel.

3. But there was much misunderstanding about the Messiah.

AN IMPORTANT QUESTION RAISED

“And He said to them, ‘How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: ‘The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.’ Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?’’”

Luke 20:41-44

1. “And He said to them, ‘How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David?’”

a. This was a question the Lord Jesus raised up to the three groups of people who sought to ensnare Him with questions.

b. The three groups were:

i. The Pharisees

ii. The Sadducees

iii. The scribes

2. The popular idea

a. The Messiah was “the Son of David”.

b. Meaning:

i. He would be like David, a king of Israel.

ii. If so, his reign would be only political.

iii. It would be temporal rather than eternal.

iv. The Messiah would be a mere mortal.

3. Citation of a Prophetic Psalm.

“Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: ‘The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.’’”

Luke 20:42-43

a. This was a citation of Psalm 110:1.

b. This Psalm was written by David.

c. The word “LORD” was a reference to God.

d. The word “Lord”:

i. This could not refer to a mere physical son of David.

ii. David called Him “Lord!”

iii. God would personally see to the defeat of the Lord’s enemies.

4. The wrong understanding of the Messiah corrected

a. The phrase “Son of David”.

i. It is a title.

ii. It is a Messianic title.

b. The Messiah

i. He is no mere political king.

ii. He is Lord even of David.

iii. He is far greater than any of their ideas.

iv. All the prophecies of the Messiah would be fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ.
