THE SECRET PLANS OF THE CHIEF PRIESTS

1. The religious leaders could not defeat the Lord Jesus in any way.

a. Not in knowledge
b. Nor in debate

2. They decided on the following course of action.

Luke 20:20

ii. They did not believe He was totally blameless.
iii. They believed that there must be some flaws in the Lord they can pounce on.
b. They sent spies.
i. These pretended to be righteous.
ii. They were hypocrites!
c. They wanted to catch the Lord Jesus at His words.

ii. They could then deliver Him to be tried by the Roman governor.
iii. Rome held great power and authority in Judea.

USING FLATTERY

1. The spies of the chief priests sent some people to the Lord Jesus.

2. This group of spies decided they would use flattery.

a. Perhaps the Lord Jesus would allow flattery to get to His head.
b. Perhaps then He would let His guard down.

3. This was they said to Him.

“Then they asked Him, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favouritism, but teach the way of God in truth: Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’”

Luke 20:21-22

a. They said nice things about the Lord Jesus.
i. He had taught rightly.
ii. He had shown no favouritism.
iii. He had taught the way of God in truth.
b. They then raised a question that was difficult to answer.
i. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
ii. This was a tricky question.
iii. The spies did not think the Lord Jesus would be able to answer this question easily.
