A CRYPTIC ANSWER
1. The religious leaders rejected this Parable about the wicked vinedressers.
2. The Lord Jesus however knew that this Parable was true.
3. He gave a cryptic reply to the opposing religious leaders.
CITING TEXTS FROM THE SCRIPTURES
“Then He looked at them and said, ‘What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone’? Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.’”
Luke 20:17-18
1. The Lord Jesus raised this question to His detractors.
“‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone’?”
Luke 20:17
a. This text came from Psalm 118:22.
b. The Lord Jesus was the stone which the builders had rejected.
c. Prophetically, this rejected stone would become the chief cornerstone.
d. The Church would be built on the Lord Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20).
2. The Lord Jesus went on to cite another text.
“Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

a. This was a text that was taken from Isaiah 8:14.

c. Instead, it was “an applied quote”.

ANGER OF THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND SCRIBES
“And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people— for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.”
Luke 20:19
1. The chief priests and the scribes.
a. They had lost another battle with the Lord Jesus.
b. They knew that the Lord had spoken this Parable against them.
2. They were of course very angry.
a. They wanted to arrest the Lord Jesus there and then.
b. But they were afraid of the multitudes.
i. They loved the teaching of the Lord Jesus.
ii. They would oppose any attempt to arrest Him.
c. The enemies had remained unrepentant of their wicked ways.
