Text: Luke 17: 7-10

IMPORTANT GOALS OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

1. The Lord Jesus sought to teach His Disciples the vital things:

a. Correct Biblical Knowledge.
b. A genuinely deep faith.

These must not be taken for granted!

2. The Lord also sought to teach them how to regard service.

a. The Disciples learned to serve the multitudes.
b. The Lord Jesus taught them by example.
c. They must possess the following:
i. Compassion for the people.
ii. Faith that would help them be a blessing to all.

A CORRECT APPROACH TOWARDS SERVICE

“And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’? But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’”

Luke 17:7-10

1. The Master and the servant

a. The Disciples must learn what it means to be a servant.
b. They must not think of themselves as “masters”.

2. The illustration of a master

a. He has a servant plowing the field.
b. He also has a servant looking after the sheep.

3. At the end of the working day.

a. The master will not say to the servant.

“Come at once and sit down to eat”

Luke 17:7

b. What the master will say:

“Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink”

Luke 17:8

c. Does he thank the servant?
He does not have to!

4. A commendable heart to have as a good servant.

a. He does not expect compliments.
b. He does not expect rewards.
c. This is what he will say.

“We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.”

Luke 17:10

Let us be challenged to cultivate such a heart!
