Text: Luke 12: 49-50

DEEP AND PROFOUND THOUGHTS SHARED I

1. There were teachings of the Lord Jesus that were clear and easy to appreciate.

a. That the Lord Jesus can forgive sins (Luke 5:24).
b. That He had come to call people to repentance (Luke 5:32).

2. There were also teachings that were deep and profound.

“I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to be baptized with,
and how distressed I am till it is accomplished!”

Luke 12:49-50

a. “I came to send fire on the earth” (Luke 12:49)
i. The word “fire” is a symbol.
ii. Negatively, fire can burn and destroy.
iii. Positively, fire can purify.
iv. The Lord will do both things.
b. Fire has to be kindled first.
i. The kindling had not yet begun.
ii. But soon it would begin.
iii. It would begin with His death.

3. “But I have a baptism to be baptized with” (Luke 12:50a)

The Baptism the Lord Jesus was referring to:

a. This was not the Baptism He had.
i. This was recorded in all Gospels.
ii. His Baptism was His anointing to begin His public Ministry.
b. The word “Baptism” has a deeper symbolic meaning here.
i. This “baptism” was a reference to His suffering and death.
ii. His ministry would culminate in His death on the Cross.
iii. This was all a part of God’s great salvation plan.

4. “And how distressed I am till it is accomplished!” (Luke 12:50b)

a. What the word “distressed” does not mean:
i. It does not mean that the Lord Jesus was upset.
ii. It does not mean that He was uncertain.
b. What the word “distressed” means:
i. It means that the Lord Jesus was “pre-occupied”.
ii. There were many things to do in ministry.
iii. But the major thing He was fully occupied with was His death.
c. There were many things to face that could be distracting:
i. Physical pain.
ii. Bearing the burdens of the world on His shoulders.
iii. The weakness of His Disciples.
iv. The persecution of the enemies.
v. These things tended to “distress” (pre-occupy His mind).
vi. But the Lord Jesus would remain faithful and true to the very end.

iii.

iii.

iii.

iii.

iii.
