OBJECTION TO THE PRONOUNCEMENT OF WOES

1. We cannot but wonder why the Pharisee invited the Lord Jesus for a meal in his home.

2. His personal guest list would include:

a. Fellow Pharisees
b. Scribes
c. Even a lawyer or two (Luke 11:45).
i. The word “lawyer” means “an expert in the law of Moses”.
ii. They specialised in the legal aspects of the Mosaic law.

3. Why was this invitation given at all?

a. Was it really out of goodwill?
b. Or was it an opportunity to put the Lord Jesus on the spot?
c. They knew that He did not keep the law as they did.
d. They may have felt quite confident that they had “cornered” the Lord Jesus.

4. The Objection raised

“Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, ‘Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also.’”

Luke 11:45

a. His objection was that the Lord Jesus had generalised His pronouncement of “Woes”.
b. The lawyers felt they could be distinguished from the others.
c. If the “Woes” were not challenged, they too would be included.
d. The lawyers belonged to the category of the Scribes.
e. They felt that they were somewhat above the others!
f. They felt offended by the Lord’s proclamation of “Woes”.

ANOTHER SERIES OF WOES PRONOUNCED

1. The First “Woe” against the lawyers.

“And He said, ‘Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.’”

Luke 11:46

a. They used the law to burden people.
b. But they themselves found “loopholes” in the law.
c. Thus, they could skip the laws they insisted others must keep!
d. This was surely abuse of the law!

2. The Second “Woe” against the lawyers.

“Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.”

Luke 11:47

a. The lawyers themselves may not have killed the prophets.
b. Their “fathers” did!
c. They could have come to the defence of the prophets.
d. They did not offer help when they should have.
e. They “make up” by building tombs for the prophets.
f. They could have saved the lives of those who were persecuted but they did not do anything to uphold justice.
g. “Woe” was rightly pronounced against them.
