Text: Luke 11: 37-38

RELIGIOUS RITUALS

1. To the Pharisees, religious rituals were of great importance.

2. One of those rituals is noted in this text. It was the ritual of hand-washing before a meal.

THE CRITICISM OF THE PHARISEES

1. They were quick to criticise:

a. What the Lord Jesus taught.

b. What He did.

2. They thought of themselves as being superior.

a. They were highly educated.

b. They saw themselves as very righteous.

c. They measured people against the standards they established.

3. Criticising the Lord Jesus.

a. The Lord Jesus was invited to a meal (Luke 11:37a).

b. This was at the home of one of the Pharisees (Luke 11:37b).

c. He went in and sat down to dine with the host (Luke 11:37c).

d. They noted that “He had not first washed before dinner” (Luke 11:38).

THE ELABORATE HAND-WASHING RITUAL OF THE PHARISEES

1. Stone vessels were used to keep the water for the washing of hands.

a. This water was separate from ordinary water available.

b. Ordinary water was not considered clean enough.

2. The hands are carefully washed and rinsed twice.

a. From the fingers to the wrist.

b. From the wrist to the fingers.

3. Anyone who does not go through this ritual properly:

a. He is considered very sinful.

b. The food that he partakes is considered as unclean as excrement!

4. This was not a matter of hygiene!

a. Even if a rabbi were to disregard this ritual he could be excommunicated!

b. The Lord Jesus did not observe this ritual and this made the Pharisee host marvel (Luke 11:38).

b. 从手腕到手指

3. 任何没有正确完成这个仪式的人

a. 他将被认为是有大罪的

b. 他所吃的食物被视为与粪便一样不洁净

4. 这不是卫生问题！
