Text: Genesis 37: 25-28
MEDITATION
Genesis 37:25-28
25 And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt.
26 So Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
27 Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh.” And his brothers listened.
28 Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The brothers of Joseph
a. They had their usual meal.
b. They could go about their normal activities, despite having imprisoned Joseph!
2. An Ishmaelite caravan
a. The tribe of Ishmael was related by blood.
i. Ishmael was the first-born of Abraham.
ii. His mother was Hagar the Egyptian maid of Sarah.
b. Traders on their way to Egypt:
i. They had come from Gilead on their way to Egypt.
ii. They were trading in spices, balm and myrrh.
3. Judah’s suggestion
a. He too did not want to have Joseph killed by the brothers.
b. He suggested selling Joseph instead.
4. Midianite traders
They were part of the Ishmaelite group going to trade in Egypt.
a. Midian was an offspring of Abraham and Keturah (Genesis 25:1-2).
b. They bought Joseph for twenty shekels of silver to be sold as slave in Egypt.
