Text: Genesis 34: 30-31
MEDITATION
Genesis 34:30-31
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I.”
31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Jacob’s remonstration with Simeon and Levi
a. They had brought trouble:
i. To Jacob.
ii. To the whole family.
b. Their deed:
i. It was obnoxious.
ii. It was uncalled-for wickedness.
c. The danger:
i. There were other tribes living in Canaan.
ii. There were the Perizzites.
iii. There were the Canaanites.
iv. They could have ties with the Hivites (through marriage or trade).
They could come and take revenge on Jacob and his family.
v. Jacob’s family was very small in comparison to the old established tribes.
2. The response of Simeon and Levi
a. They were totally unremorseful and unrepentant.
b. They retorted: “Should he treat our sister as a harlot?”
c. The two brothers were so full of anger and bitterness they were blind to reason.
