Text: Genesis 17: 17-18
MEDITATION
Genesis 17:17-18
17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
18 And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Mixed feelings
a. Abraham had mixed feelings when God spoke to him.
b. He fell on his face.
i. This was an expression of humility before God.
ii. To receive yet another word from the LORD was always humbling.
c. “Laughed”
i. It seemed funny to hear what God had said.
ii. There was some unbelief in his heart.
d. “Said in his heart”
i. He reasoned within his heart.
ii. He was speaking to himself.
e. His line of thought:
i. Abraham was about 100 years old.
ii. Sarah was about 90 years old.
iii. How could Sarah bear a child at her age?
2. Abraham’s response to God
a. His prayer was for Ishmael.
i. If only he could live (survive)
ii. He was Abraham’s son.
iii. He could be the heir.
b. He could not find fullness of faith to believe God’s promise to Sarah, that she would become a mother.
c. He struggled to believe that this word of promise would actually be fulfilled literally.
