Text: Exodus 21: 33-36

MEDITATION

Exodus 21:33-36

33 “And if a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls in it,
34 the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to their owner, but the dead animal shall be his.
35 “If one man’s ox hurts another’s, so that it dies, then they shall sell the live ox and divide the money from it; and the dead ox they shall also divide.
36 Or if it was known that the ox tended to thrust in time past, and its owner has not kept it confined, he shall surely pay ox for ox, and the dead animal shall be his own.

MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE

1. Digging of a pit

a. Due care should be taken.
b. A pit should be covered properly.

2. If an animal would fall into an uncovered pit

a. An ox
b. A donkey
c. Payment for the injured animal must be paid to the owner.
d. The dead animal now belongs to the person who dug the pit.
e. It would be his responsibility to dispose of the dead animal.

3. If animals hurt each other

a. If an ox hurts another so badly, that death occurs.
b. The live ox must be sold.
i. The money is to be divided between the two owners.
ii. The court would decide what would be fair and just division.

4. If the ox has a history of goring other animals

If the owner had not confined his ox:
a. He is held responsible.
b. He has to pay compensation.
c. The dead animal will now belong to him.

33“人若敞着井口,或挖井不遮盖,有牛或驴掉在里头,
34井主要拿钱赔还本主人,死牲畜要归自己。
35“这人的牛若伤了那人的牛,以至于死,他们要卖了活牛,平分价值,也要平分死牛。

36人若知道这牛素来是触人的,主人竟不把牛拴着,他必要以牛还牛,死牛要归自己。

在生活里有意义地应用

1. 挖井

a. 应该注意安全
b. 井口必须适当地遮着

2. 如果一只动物掉进那口井

a. 一头牛
b. 一只驴
c. 必须赔钱给受伤动物的主人
d. 死牲畜将归给井主
e. 井主将有责任处置死了的动物

3. 如果动物互相伤害

a. 如果一头牛伤势严重至死
b. 活着的牛将被卖
i. 赚的钱将分给两头牛的主人
ii. 法院将审判平分的比例

4. 如果那头牛曾经有伤害别的动物,但主人并没有把牛拴着

a. 那主人得负责任
b. 他必须赔偿
c. 死的动物将属于他
