Text: Exodus 17: 14-16
MEDITATION
Exodus 17:14-16
14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.”
15 And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-LORD-Is-My-Banner;
16 for he said, “Because the LORD has sworn: the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. The LORD’s instructions to Moses
a. There were lessons to be learned at different times in life.
b. This battle against the Amalekites offered many lessons.
c. Some lessons were to be recorded for posterity.
d. This lesson involved the future of the Amalekites.
2. The lessons highlighted:
a. God had pronounced a judgment against the Amalekites.
b. Amalek would be destroyed totally.
c. It would be a nation whose name would be remembered no more.
3. Reasons for this judgment
a. Amalek had no cause to attack Israel.
b. Their attack was unprovoked.
c. Their act of war was both hostile and evil.
i. They could have killed a lot of people.
ii. They could have caused a lot of damage.
4. God would now go to war with the Amalekites until they are finally destroyed.
5. This was a solemn oath made by the LORD.
6. Appropriate response
a. Moses created an altar:
i. To worship God.
ii. To thank God for His protection.
iii. To praise God for the victory over the wicked Amalekites.
b. The name of the altar
i. It was called “The LORD is my banner”.
ii. The LORD had defeated the new enemy, the Amalekites.
