Day 180 – Mark 8

“And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.” 2 Peter 2:2

NO REPLY FROM THE DISCIPLES

To the series of questions Jesus raised, the Disciples had no answer! They could not come up with any suitable answer at all. They recognized only too well their obvious deficiencies.

GUIDANCE FOR THE DISCIPLES

It is almost embarrassing to note how Jesus had to teach His Disciples, to comprehend simple truths.

“And do you not remember?
When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand,
how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?
They said to Him, ‘Twelve.'”
MARK 8:18-19

1. A basic problem- ” Do you not remember?”

It is entirely possible that the Disciples had seen Jesus perform so many miracles, they had not fully remembered the significance of each miracle!

2. The facts

Jesus needed to help the Disciples recall the time when He fed the five thousand.

a) Factual questions
How many baskets of fragments were taken up?
b) Factual answers
The answer of the Disciples was correct. They did indeed take up twelve baskets of fragments.

FURTHER GUIDANCE

Jesus felt that He needed to press further this line of teaching.

“Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand,
how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?
And they said, ‘Seven.'”
MARK 8:20

The Disciples were good at stating the obvious! They did remember taking up seven large baskets of fragments.

WHAT WAS THE POINT?

Jesus then asked them a pointed question.

“How is it you do not understand?”
MARK 8:21

What had the Disciples learned when they participated in these miracles?
