“Even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring to themselves swift destruction.”
2 Peter 2:1b

ADDRESSING PROBLEMS DIRECTLY

Jesus was always most direct with His disciples. He saw how they were reasoning among themselves. (They might even end up quarreling among themselves if they carried on with their line of thought).

“But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them,
‘Why do you reason because you have no bread?
Do you not perceive nor understand?
Is your heart still hardened?
Having eyes, do you not see?
And having ears, do you not hear?
And do you not remember?'”
MARK 8:17-18

A SERIES OF MOST UNCOMFORTABLE QUESTIONS

What a barrage of questions! And every one of them very uncomfortable. But Jesus deemed these questions important.

1. Why do you reason because you have no bread?

Why did the Disciples even begin on this plane of thought?

2. Do you not perceive or understand?

The Disciples were expected to:-

a) Have a deeper understanding (than the multitudes, for example).
b) Have a deeper perception (than the Pharisees, for another).

3. Is your heart hardened?

a) This was a new line of thought!
b) The hardening of heart is associated with poor or non-comprehension of spiritual truths.

4. Having eyes do you not see?

The Disciples had seen so many miracles performed by Jesus. Marvelous were those miracles! What exactly did they see? Did they only see the blind receive their sight? Did they only see the dead raised up? Had they not fathomed the meaning behind the miracles?

5. Having ears, do you not hear?

How much had they understood the teachings of Jesus?
