Day 138 – Mark 6

“Resist him, steadfast in the faith…” 1 Peter 5:9a

ENCOURAGED TO MINISTER MIGHTILY

The Disciples, armed with these words from the Lord Jesus went forth to minister with great zeal.

“So they went out and preached that people should repent.
And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil
many who were sick, and healed them.”
MARK 6:12-13

1. So they went out

In this simple phrase we may note the following thoughts:-

a) No doubts arose from the disciples concerning the task assigned to them.
b) There was instant obedience, indicating faith and zeal.

2. Preaching a message of repentance.

a) They would have learned much from Jesus about preaching.
b) They had heard how Jesus this same message of repentance

3. Casting out of demons

a) As expected there was demonic resistance.
b) The disciples met each demonic challenge effectively.
i) They were unafraid.
ii) They had learned to wield the authority and power given to them.
iii) They were thus able to cast out demons.

4. Anointing of the sick

This remark is interesting. Let us ponder the following thoughts:-

a) Jesus Himself did not anoint anyone with oil.
b) Were the disciples permitted to anoint people with oil?
i) Apparently “Yes” (Jesus did not restrain them from this practice).
ii) The oil would be used symbolically to express “special anointing”.
