Day 109 – Mark 5

RECOGNISING THE IDENTITY OF JESUS

The demons instantly recognized who Jesus was. Their fear of Jesus was all too apparent.

“And he cried out with a loud voice and said,
‘What have I to do with You, Jesus,
Son of the Most High God?
I implore You by God that You do not torment me.'”
MARK 5:7

1. Titles used when addressing Jesus

When demons are in the Presence of Jesus, they cannot but address Him with the regard that is due.

a) The man with the unclean spirit in a synagogue of Capernaum

“Let us alone! What have we to do with You,
Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us?
I know who You are- the Holy One of God!”
MARK 1:24

b) The man of Gadara

“What have I do to with You, Jesus, Son of the
Most High God?”
MARK 5:7

2. The significance of the use of these titles

There is great significance behind the use of these titles! Let us ponder over the following thoughts:-

a) The inferior position of demons is underscored.
i) With reference to man, the power of demons is feared.
ii) In comparison to Jesus, the power of demons is insignificant.
b) The superior position of Jesus is highlighted.
c) The full identity of the Person of Jesus as “the Holy One of God” or as “the Son of the Most High” is acknowledged, albeit grudgingly.
d) The sovereign authority of God the Father is also recognized.
e) Demons stand in awe and in abject fear of the Person and Authority of Jesus.
