“For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” 1 Peter 2:25

THE REACTION OF THE MULTITUDE

As the crowd listened to the insistent call of the family members of Jesus, they responded typically.

“And a multitude was sitting around Him;
and they said to Him, ‘Look, Your mother
and Your brothers are outside seeking You.'”
MARK 3:32

1. Ignorance of the multitude

a) They did not know that they had come to seize Jesus (Mark 3:21).
b) They did not know that they had not come for a social visit.
c) They did not know that many of His family members did not believe in Him.
i) They did not have any personal faith in Him as the Messiah.
ii) They did not believe in His ministry.

2. A typical response

a) The multitude was essentially Jewish.
b) Familial ties are very strong and respected.
c) Familial ties sometimes took precedence over ministry.

3. The absence of the mention of Joseph, Jesus’ legal father

a) It is likely that he had passed on by this time.
b) Jesus would have fulfilled His obligations to provide for the family by now.
c) His younger brothers would have been able to work and provide for the family.

4. There was not a full comprehension of the ministry of the Messiah

a) He was God’s Special Son.
b) He was the Messiah.
c) Physical Familial Ties must be understood differently where Jesus is concerned.
