Day 78 – Mark 3

“Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness- by whose stripes you were healed.” 1 Peter 2:24

FURTHER IDENTIFICATION OF “HIS OWN PEOPLE”

If there is any uncertainty that the phrase “His own people” (Cf. Mark 3:21) was a reference to the family of Jesus, the following text would remove any doubt.

“Then His brothers and His mother came,
and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him.”
MARK 3:31

THE REASONS WHY JESUS’ FAMILY HAD COME

a) They must have heard about the mighty ministry of Jesus.
i) How He was a great Teacher.
ii) How He was a glorious Healer of the sick.
iii) How He wielded might so powerful that demons obeyed him.
b) They might well have had a distorted idea of what Jesus did.
i) Unless they were His disciples (and they were not) they would not be able to understand Him.
ii) If they had heard the garbled version of who Jesus was from the lips of the scribes and the Pharisees, their doubts about Him would become worse.
c) They knew Jesus as their brother.
i) The siblings of Jesus must have been surprised that their Brother could have displayed such Divine gifts and power.
ii) It is unlikely that they had seen Him perform any miracle; Jesus was not given to perform personal miracles in His own home.
d) They had come with express purpose.
i) They had come to seize Jesus.
ii) They had come with a preconceived notion that Jesus was out of His mind.
iii) However, when they saw the multitudes, they realized that they could not “seize” Him. They could not have had easy access to their Brother at all. The only thing they could do was to call out to Jesus to come and meet with them.
