THE FOCUS OF THE GOSPEL OF MARK

The focus of the Gospel of Mark was to record the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ on earth. Mark chose a very dynamic approach. Using vigorous and vivid language, he traced the outline of Jesus’ ministry on earth, right up to His suffering, death and resurrection.

A CONTINUING MINISTRY

We cannot expect the Gospel of Mark to describe the ministry of the Lord Jesus in the heavenly realm. We would need to look at the Book of Hebrews to see a more complete picture of the Lord Jesus Christ as the great High Priest of all believers. Let us look at just three aspects of Jesus’ continuing ministry.

1. His title and ministry

Jesus has a great and absolutely vital ministry in heaven.

“…that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest
in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation
for the sins of the people…”
HEBREWS 2:17

2. A sympathetic Intercessor

What a glorious description of Jesus as our great Intercessor.

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest
who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God,
let us hold fast our confession.
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathise
with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are,
yet without sin!”
HEBREWS 4:14-15

3. The Author of eternal salvation

The work of Christ on earth truly made Him the great author of our eternal salvation.

“And having been perfected, He became the author
of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.”
HEBREWS 5:9

AN IMPORTANT SUMMARY TEXT

Let us ponder this important “summary” text concerning the high priestly ministry of the Lord Jesus.

“Now this is the main point of the things we are saying:
We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of
the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle
which the Lord erected, and not man.”
HEBREWS 8:1-2
