BETRAYED!

Over and against the so-called “Gospel of Judas”, which portrayed Judas Iscariot as a special disciple, or even a hero, Mark’s description of Judas must be chosen as the accurate one.

“Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve,
went to the chief priests to betray Him to them.”
MARK 14:10

Let us consider the reasons why we believe Mark’s account is correct:-

1. The Gospel of Judas (Non-canonical gospel)

a) This is a fourth century document.
b) It was written by Gnostic followers (heretical group).
c) Judas’ act was not a betrayal but obedience to the Lord Jesus’ secret instruction.
d) Gnostic teaching suggested that the spirit is trapped in the human body; Judas was helping Jesus’ spirit escape.

2. The Canonical Gospels

a) The four canonical Gospels were considered “The pillars of the Church” (Irenaeus of Lyons c. 185AD)
b) NIV Study Bible suggests the following dates (Traditional Christian scholarship)
i) Mark c. 50s-60s
ii) Matthew c. 50s-70s
iii) Luke c. 59-63, (or 70s-80s)
iv) John c. 85-100 (or 50s-70s)
c) Portrayal of Judas as the betrayer of Jesus
There is full agreement from all the evangelists, the name given to all the Gospel writers. Adding to Mark’s account, we have the following:-
i) Matthew described Judas going to the chief priests Matthew 26:14-16
ii) Luke described how Satan entered Judas Luke 22:3-6
iii) John identified Judas as the betrayer at the Last Supper John 13:18-20
