“So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart.” Acts 2:46

PARABLE OF A MAN GOING TO A FAR COUNTRY

Once again, Jesus employed a parable to reinforce His teachings.

“It is like a man going to a far country,
who left his house and gave authority to his servants,
and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch.”
MARK 13:34

1. A man going to a far country

Jesus’ imminent departure may indeed be likened to this man in the parable.

2. Gave authority to his servants

In like manner, Jesus gave authority to His Disciples (Cf. Mark 3:14-15).

3. Each to his work

All are given work to do! The Disciples in the days of Jesus, the Church today, and this thought may even be extended to every individual believer.

4. Commanded the doorkeeper to watch

There was even a humble “doorkeeper”. Even he had a job to do for his master. His task was “to watch” for the return of the master.

a) This was no small responsibility.
b) The task of the doorkeeper was to ensure the following:-
i) The house is kept safe and secure.
ii) The house would be open to the master- at whatever time he returned!

A CHURCH THAT HAD FALLEN ASLEEP ON ITS WATCH

The Church at Sardis is an example of what it means to be unwatchful.

“I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive,
but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things
which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found
your works perfect before God…
Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief,
and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.”
REVELATION 3:1-3

Unwatchfulness can lead to spiritual deadness! There is no substitute to watchfulness!
