Day 249 – Mark 11

“Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words.” Acts 2:14b

THE FIG TREE REVISITED

It was now the second morning. Once again, Jesus and His Disciples made their way to Jerusalem. They were walking down familiar paths when they saw the fig tree that Jesus addressed.

“Now in the morning, as they passed by,
they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
And Peter, remembering said to Him,
‘Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed
has withered away.'”
MARK 11:20-21

1. The death of the fig tree

The Disciples had heard what Jesus said to the fig tree (Mark 11:14). But they did not expect that it would be shriveled up the very next day!

2. The symbol of the fig tree

It must have been astonishing to see a tree alive one day, and dead the next. But what Peter and the rest of the disciples missed was the symbolic meaning behind the demise of the fig tree.

REVISITING THE SUBJECT OF FAITH

Once again, Jesus the supreme, consummate Teacher, used this opportunity to teach His Disciples a vital lesson on the subject of faith.

“So Jesus answered and said to them,
‘Have faith in God. For assuredly I say to you,
whoever says to this mountain,
‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’
and does not doubt in his heart,
but believes that those things he says will be done,
he will have whatever he says.'”
MARK 11:22-23

1. A new dimension

Jesus opened up yet another dimension of faith. This new aspect was even more astonishing! Jesus sought to explain how His faith was applied with great impact!

2. Faith and Words

a) There was potential power in words.
b) Words backed up by faith have astonishing power.
c) But there must be no doubt in the heart!
