THE ANGER OF THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS

There was no mistaking the hostility of the religious leaders against Jesus.

“And the scribes and chief priests heard it
and sought how they might destroy Him;
for they feared Him, because all the people
were astonished at His teaching.”
MARK 11:18

Let us take time to trace this sense of hostility that grew against Jesus.

1. The conspirators included the following:-

a) Pharisees Mark 3:6
b) Herodians Mark 3:6
c) Scribes Mark 11:18
d) Chief priests Mark 11:18

2. Reasons for their animosity towards Jesus

a) Anger- They were bested by Jesus in public debate Mark 2-3
b) Humiliation- They were publicly rebuked by Jesus Mark 7
c) Loss of business- Cleansing of the temple Mark 11
d) Popularity of Jesus- Mark 11:18

3. Attempts to discredit Jesus

a) Sneering at Jesus for eating with sinners Mark 2:16
b) Accusing Jesus of being in league with Beelzebub Mark 3:22

All attempts and plots had miserably failed!

LEAVING JERUSALEM IN THE EVENING

Once again, Mark noted that Jesus refused to stay in Jerusalem.

“When evening had come, He went out of the city”
MARK 11:19

Each night would see him return to Bethany in the company of His disciples.
