"The lips of a priest"

Text: Malachi 2:7

ESSENTIAL STANDARDS

The ministry of the priests and Levites were never meant to be merely ceremonial or perfunctory. There were essential standards that were meant to be kept!

“For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge,
And people should seek the law from his mouth;
For he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.”
Malachi 2:7

1. “For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge”

a) “Knowledge”
i) The priest must possess knowledge of God.
ii) He must know the Holy Scriptures well.
b) “The lips of a priest”
i) Knowledge must be in his mouth.
ii) His knowledge of God ought to be deep and profound.

2. “And people should seek the law from his mouth”

a) It is natural that the people of God would like to know Him better.
b) But they may not have the privilege of being able to study the Scriptures in depth, as the priests would have.
c) The people should be able to find knowledge of God and His law:
i) From the priest.
ii) From the Levites.
iii) They are supposed to have devoted themselves to reading and mastering the Scriptures.

3. “For he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts”

a) The role of the priest is that he is a messenger of the LORD.
b) He is supposed to have a word from God to the people.
c) The sad reality was that the priests and Levites were poor messengers of God!
