"When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem"

Text: Joel 3:1

MANY ASPECTS OF THE DAY OF THE LORD

The Day of the LORD has many aspects. One of those aspects has to do with the captives of Judah.

“For behold, in those days and at that time,
When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem.”
Joel 3:1

1. “For behold”

a) God would do a work that would be of significance.
b) Hence, there is a call to pay close attention.

2. “In those days and at that time”

a) It has reference to the Day of the LORD.
b) The same theme is discussed in Joel 3.

3. “When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem”

a) This was a prophetic word.
b) God would do something special for the captives of Judah and Jerusalem.

A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

1. It was God who chastened Judah and Jerusalem

a) For their idolatry.
b) For their waywardness.
c) For their wickedness.

2. The prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel wrote extensively in their books

a) Jeremiah prophesied that Judah would go into captivity for 70 years (Jeremiah 25:11).
b) The reasons were declared again and again by the prophets of God.

3. God also declared that He would punish those who ill-treated His people

a) Babylon was mentioned (Jeremiah 25:12).
b) Many nations took part in the destruction of Judah and they would be held accountable (Jeremiah 25:14).
i) God would repay them.
ii) According to the works of their hands.
c) These prophecies were also proclaimed by the prophet Joel.
d) These words of warning were declared solemnly and prophetically.
e) These would be fulfilled as all prophecies of the Lord would be fulfilled.
