"Who is the wise man who may understand this?"

Text: Jeremiah 9:12

THE WISE MAN

Who was truly wise in the kingdom of Judah? Many think themselves wise- the king, the princes, the judges etc. The question of who was truly wise was raised up.

“Who is the wise man who may understand this?
And who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD has spoken,
that he may declare it?
Why does the land perish and burn up like a wilderness,
so that no one can pass through?”
Jeremiah 9:12

1. “Who is the wise man who may understand this?”

a) Understanding what?
i) The Judgment of the Lord.
ii) The prophetic word of the Lord.
b) These words had been preached clearly:
i) Powerfully
ii) Repeatedly

But no one seemed to be wise enough to comprehend this urgent word!

2. “And who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD has spoken, that he may declare it?”

a) A second question was raised.
i) To whom has God spoken?
ii) So that he may then proclaim it.
b) The answer is obvious!
i) To the wise man.
ii) This man would surely proclaim the wisdom of God!

Again, sadly, there were few truly wise men!

3. “Why does the land perish and burn up like a wilderness, so that no one can pass through?”

a) A third related question was raised up.
i) Why was the land likened to a wilderness so that people avoid it?
b) The answer:
i) Wise men were lacking.
ii) Thus, the message of God was not declared.
iii) The judgment of the Lord would then befall the nation of Judah.
iv) It would become a wilderness that many would avoid.

4. The challenge

a) To seek to be that wise man.
b) To be the man to whom God would give His word.
c) To be that messenger of the Lord that the nation may not perish and become a desolate wilderness!
