"I will bring judgment on her carved images"

Text: Jeremiah 51:52

JUDGMENT ON THE IDOLS

The Lord’s judgment was also to fall on the idols that the Babylonians worshipped! The idols were symbolic of the deities that the Babylonians believed in.

“‘Therefore behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD,
‘That I will bring judgment on her carved images,
And throughout all her land the wounded shall groan.
Though Babylon were to mount up to heaven,
And though she were to fortify the height of her strength,
Yet from Me plunderers would come to her,’ says the LORD.
Jeremiah 51:52-53

1. “‘Therefore behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘That I will bring judgment
on her carved images, and throughout all her land the wounded shall groan'”

a) The judgment was first foretold.

b) What were some of the reasons why the carved images would be judged?

i) To negate the belief of the Babylonians that the idols had power.

ii) To downplay the ascription of power and glory to the idols.

iii) To extol the LORD as the only One who had supreme power.

c) The judgment of the carved images.

i) Their powerlessness would become obvious.

ii) Their influence over so many would come to an end.

d) Many would be wounded in battle.

i) They would groan and moan.

ii) The idols they worshipped would be unable to help them in any way.

2. “‘Though Babylon were to mount up to heaven, and though she were to fortify the height of her strength, yet from Me plunderers would come to her,’ says the LORD”

a) Some still believed that they can mount up to heaven.

b) They believed they could still fortify themselves significantly once again.

c) They believed that their empire cannot be destroyed.

d) But they would be so very wrong.

i) Their idols were useless.

ii) The Babylonians would be defeated.

iii) The plunderers would loot Babylon.
