"And I will repay Babylon"

Text: Jeremiah 51:24

TWO MESSAGES FROM THE LORD

The first message was directed to Judah. The second message was directed to Babylon. Both messages were of significance.

“‘And I will repay Babylon
And all the inhabitants of Chaldea
For all the evil they have done
In Zion in your sight,’ says the LORD.
‘Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain,
Who destroys all the earth,’ says the LORD.
‘And I will stretch out My hand against you,
Roll you down from the rocks,
And make you a burnt mountain.
They shall not take from you a stone for a corner
Nor a stone for a foundation,
But you shall be desolate forever,’ says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 51:24-26

1. “‘And I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea
for all the evil they have done in Zion in your sight,’ says the LORD”

a) Judah had witnessed the atrocities done in Zion.

b) The LORD promised that He would repay Babylon for all its evil deeds.

2. “‘Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain, who destroys all the earth,’
says the LORD. ‘And I will stretch out My hand against you, roll you down from the rocks,
and make you a burnt mountain'”

a) God now addressed Babylon calling it, “O destroying mountain”.

b) Babylon became a menacing and destructive force all over the earth.

c) The LORD would take stern action against Babylon.

i) He would stretch out His hand against Babylon.

ii) He will roll Babylon downhill.

iii) It would no longer be a destroying mountain.
It would be despised as a “burnt mountain”.

3. “‘They shall not take from you a stone for a corner nor a stone for a foundation, but you shall be desolate forever,’ says the LORD”

a) Babylon would be so burnt out the stones would be useless.

b) No one would choose any stone from Babylon to be a cornerstone.

c) Nor a foundation stone.

d) Babylon would become desolate permanently.
