"The LORD has revealed our righteousness"

Text: Jeremiah 51:10

THE WORK OF THE LORD OUR GOD

In 722 BC, the Assyrians conquered Israel. In 586 BC, the Babylonians conquered Judah. Both Israel and Judah went into exile. There were many Jews in Babylon.

“We would have healed Babylon,
But she is not healed.
Forsake her, and let us go everyone to his own country;
For her judgment reaches to heaven and is lifted up to the skies.
The LORD has revealed our righteousness.
Come and let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God.”
Jeremiah 51:9-10

1. “We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed.
Forsake her, and let us go everyone to his own country;
for her judgment reaches to heaven and is lifted up to the skies”

a) Many Jews had settled in Babylon.

b) They had heeded Jeremiah and his letter to all who dwelled in Babylon
(Jeremiah 29).

i) To make the best of the circumstances in Babylon.

ii) To settle down and to do well in Babylon.

c) These would have liked to “heal Babylon”.

i) To help the nation.

ii) To improve the people.

iii) But Babylon was not healed because of its pride and self-will.

d) The only conclusion left.

i) To forsake and leave Babylon.

ii) All inhabitants would be well-advised to depart from there
and to return to their respective countries.

e) The judgment of the LORD against Babylon was a huge and heavy one.
(It was monumental so that it was described as “reaching heaven”.)

2. “The LORD has revealed our righteousness.
Come and let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God”

a) Our righteousness:

i) Israel and Judah had forsaken the idols they used to worship.

ii) The Jews had returned to the LORD.

iii) God had pardoned their sins.

iv) They were declared “righteous”.

v) They had been sanctified by God.

vi) God had personally declared His people were “righteous”.

vii) No more would they bow their knees to any idol.

b) The challenge was issued to the returnees.

i) They must declare the works of the LORD when they returned to Zion.

ii) God would destroy Babylon but He would give Israel a new hope for the future.
