"Their Redeemer is strong"

Text: Jeremiah 50:34

THE REDEEMER OF ISRAEL AND JUDAH

The LORD revealed that He was going to do a special work of redemption for His people. This work would cover both Israel and Judah.

“Thus says the LORD of hosts:
‘The children of Israel were oppressed,
Along with the children of Judah;
All who took them captive have held them fast;
They have refused to let them go.
Their Redeemer is strong;
The LORD of hosts is His name.
He will thoroughly plead their case,
That He may give rest to the land,
And disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.'”
Jeremiah 50:33-34

1. “Thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘The children of Israel were oppressed,
along with the children of Judah; all who took them captive have held them fast;
they have refused to let them go'”

a) The oppression of God’s people:

i) Israel (Assyrians)

ii) Judah (Babylonians)

b) They were held captive by the Assyrians and the Babylonians.

c) The captors had refused to let them go.

d) This work of redemption resembled God’s work when He delivered
the children of Israel from the oppression of the Egyptians.

2. “Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is His name.
He will thoroughly plead their case, that He may give rest to the land,
and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon”

a) The LORD is their strong Redeemer.

b) His name is “The LORD of hosts”.

c) He would give rest to His people in the land.

d) But He would bring about disquiet to all who lived in Babylon.

e) The contrast is huge:

i) He will redeem Israel and Judah.

ii) He will judge haughty and arrogant Babylon.
