"They have lied about the LORD"

Text: Jeremiah 5:12

SIN UPON SIN

This time round, the LORD mentioned both Israel and Judah in the same breath. There were sins that were committed by both Israel and Judah.

“‘For the house of Israel and the house of Judah
Have dealt very treacherously with Me,’ says the LORD.
They have lied about the LORD,
And said, ‘It is not He.
Neither will evil come upon us,
Nor shall we see sword or famine.'”
Jeremiah 5:11-12

1. “For the house of Israel and the house of Judah”

a) Israel and Judah became separate nations.

i) Rehoboam, the son of Solomon was king when the kingdom was split.

ii) Jeroboam became the first king of the nation of Israel.

b) Both houses continued to sin and to decline morally.

2. “‘Have dealt very treacherously with Me,’ says the LORD”

a) Treachery

i) Both reneged on their commitment to their faith in God.

ii) Treachery was seen when God was rejected in favour of idols.

b) “Very treacherous”

i) Their sins were not light ones.

ii) Their behaviour was indeed aptly described as “very treacherous”.

3. “They have lied about the LORD, and said, ‘It is not He.'”

a) God had spoken very clearly and directly.

b) His prophets, like Jeremiah, had spoken solemnly.

c) The response of the people?

i) They rejected what the prophets preached.

ii) They simply declared that these messages were not from God.

iii) They had to lie to counter the messages of the prophets.

4. “Neither will evil come upon us, nor shall we see sword or famine.”

a) The prophets had warned about the following disasters:

i) Evil

ii) Sword

iii) Famine

b) These prophetic words of warning were rejected by the people, from both Israel and Judah.

i) These woes would not come to pass.

ii) God would not see Jerusalem suffer such things.
