"My people are foolish"

Text: Jeremiah 4:22

GOD’S GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM

Israel and Judah were blessed in so many ways! They were given the land of Canaan. They saw many mighty miracles of God. Above all, they were given much knowledge and wisdom in their literature and in their Scriptures especially. But Israel did not treasure what God had given to them.

“For My people are foolish,
They have not known Me.
They are silly children,
And they have no understanding.
They are wise to do evil,
But to do good they have no knowledge.”
Jeremiah 4:22

1. “For My people are foolish, they have not known Me.”

a) This was a regrettable comment about Judah.
b) The people were described candidly.
i) They were foolish.
ii) They had not known God.
iii) And this, despite the fact that God had sent many prophets to teach.

2. “They are silly children, and they have no understanding.”

a) They were not born foolish or silly.
b) They could have acquired understanding.
c) But the people did not pursue knowledge or wisdom.
d) Because they disdained wisdom they end up as silly children with no understanding.

3. “They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.”

a) But when it comes to doing evil the people become “wise”.
b) But with reference to doing good there was hardly any knowledge.

This was the sad assessment of the people of Judah!
