"Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you"

Text: Jeremiah 37:19

JEREMIAH REASONS WITH THE KING

Jeremiah sought to reason with King Zedekiah. The prophet had been imprisoned wrongfully. The charge of defecting to the Chaldeans had been fabricated against Jeremiah.

“Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah,
‘What offense have I committed against you, against your servants,
or against this people, that you have put me in prison?
Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying,
‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?'”
Jeremiah 37:18-19

1. “Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah,
‘What offense have I committed against you, against your servants,
or against this people, that you have put me in prison?'”

a) King Zedekiah had summoned Jeremiah for a private audience.

b) Jeremiah then asked the king pointedly why he was imprisoned.

i) What was his offense?

ii) Why was he put in jail?

c) Jeremiah pressed the point:

i) What offense was committed against the king himself?

ii) Or against his servants?

iii) Or against the people of the land?

The prophet knew that he had committed no criminal offense of any kind!

2. “Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying,
‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?”

a) He was aware of the false prophets who had promised.

i) That the king of Babylon would not attack the king.

ii) Nor would he seek to conquer the land.

iii) Those words had proven to be false.

b) Where were these prophets?

i) The Babylonians had returned.

ii) They were stronger than ever.

iii) What did they have to say now that the land was under severe siege again?
