"I will cause their captives to return"

Text: Jeremiah 33:26

POWER TO DO THE IMPOSSIBLE

Many were not able to see beyond the immediate moment. Israel and Judah were in captivity because they were conquered by Assyria and Babylon respectively. Hardly anyone could imagine how these two nations could ever be redeemed!

“Thus says the LORD:
‘If My covenant is not with day and night,
and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth,
then I will cast away the descendants of Jacob and David My servant,
so that I will not take any of his descendants to be rulers
over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
For I will cause their captives to return, and will have mercy on them.'”
Jeremiah 33:25-26

1. “Thus says the LORD: ‘If My covenant is not with day and night,
and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth'”

a) The LORD urged Jeremiah to consider two things that were in existence:

i) God’s covenant with day and night.

ii) God’s appointed ordinances of heaven and earth.

b) That these things are sustained in good order suggest two wonderful truths.

i) God has full authority.

ii) He has all the power to sustain what He has decreed.

2. “Then I will cast away the descendants of Jacob and David My servant, so that I will not
take any of his descendants to be rulers over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”

a) God had given a Covenant to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

b) He had also given a Covenant to David.

i) David’s descendants will rule Israel.

ii) The Son of David is in mind ultimately.

iii) The distant future is in mind here.

iv) Even more, eternity is in God’s mind.

v) The Son of David, the Messiah, will be given an eternal Kingdom.

3. “For I will cause their captives to return, and will have mercy on them”

a) God assured Jeremiah and Israel that He will fulfil all that He had promised.

b) He was aware that Israel and Judah had become captives and were in exile.

c) But He will cause the captives to return to their homeland.

d) And He will show them His mercy.
