"Thus says the LORD"

Text: Jeremiah 33:17

THE AUTHORITY OF GOD

The promises of the LORD were indeed lofty. If Jeremiah struggled with God’s word, one would not be very surprised. It would take much wisdom and faith to comprehend and to believe what He had said and promised.

“For thus says the LORD:
‘David shall never lack a man
to sit on the throne of the house of Israel;
nor shall the priests, the Levites,
lack a man to offer burnt offerings before Me,
to kindle grain offerings, and to sacrifice continually.'”
Jeremiah 33:17-18

1. “For thus says the LORD:
‘David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel'”

a) This was a profound promise.

b) What did the LORD mean?

i) Zedekiah was the last king from the Davidic line.

ii) Judah was facing 70 years of captivity.

ii) There was no king in sight at all.

c) This was a mystery indeed!

i) The Messiah was in mind.

ii) He would sit on the throne of David.

iii) He would rule forever, as the King of kings.

2. “Nor shall the priests, the Levites, lack a man to offer burnt offerings before Me,
to kindle grain offerings, and to sacrifice continually”

a) This promise is even more cryptic.

b) At first reading, it would appear that we are returning to the Old Covenant days.

i) The priests

ii) The Levites

iii) The burnt offerings

iv) The other sacrifices

c) But how does this equate in the context of the New Covenant?

i) The spirit of faithful worship in mind.

ii) The focus is also on faithful service given to the LORD.

iii) The priests and Levites would be replaced
by true followers of the Messiah.

iv) They would serve Him as He deserves.
